XOJET EIFFEL TOWER

Private travel expert outlines important differences from commercial travel

Where will your vacation take you this summer? London? Paris? The French Riviera? If you want to fly by private jet, it’s not too early to start planning. Booking a private jet flight to Europe requires very special expertise. There are dozens of fees, permits and other considerations that you or your travel consultant need to know about to ensure a successful trip.

The XOJET Blog spoke with Clayton Smith, senior charter sales representative, to compile a list of five tips to ensure a smooth flight experience and a great vacation.

1.      Plan in advance. The more advance planning you do, the more choices you’ll have. "For example, if you plan 6 months out, you could have twice the aircraft options available to you," says Clayton. "A good rule of thumb is that the longer the flight, the further out you should plan." Foreign-flagged aircraft typically need several permits to enter other countries, which can take time to obtain, especially if you’re travelling to multiple destinations. Try to book at least eight to 12 weeks in advance.

2.      Be flexible. "Flying privately to Europe is quite different from flying on a commercial airline," explains Clayton. "Some airports have customs offices, some don’t. We have to take this into account when we plan, especially with customers who want non-stop travel." The more specific you are about your trip, the fewer cost-saving options will be available to you. However, if you can also be flexible on things like jet type, aircraft year of manufacture, date and time of travel, and airport, we can find the best price and options available. For example, flying into a general aviation airport like Paris’s Le Bourget could be much less expensive than flying into Charles DeGaulle.

3.      Tell us everything. When you call to book your flight, we’ll start by asking you not only for the dates and times of your trip but also your requirements and preferences. The more you let us know up front, the more options we can deliver. When we have complete information such as the size of your party (including pets!), aircraft preferences (if any), if you are willing to consider options that require a fuel stop, dietary restrictions and the like, we can deliver options to meet your exact needs—and a customized flight experience in the air. Again, being flexible your requirements can dramatically impact the options and prices available.

4.      Remember Customs. You’re no doubt aware that when you travel internationally, you’ll need to go through Customs when returning home. But where you clear customs depends on whether you are on the aircraft operator’s Border Overflight Exemption (BOE) program. Getting you an operator’s BOE could take as long as two to three weeks, and you’ll need to provide passport information for every passenger—so allow enough time. "The BOE is particularly important for non-stop flights," adds Clayton. "Check to see if your provider offers a BOE program. Otherwise you’ll have to stop to clear customs at the first point of entry into a country, possibly delaying your return home."

On a related note, if a minor child is traveling with just one parent, the other parent will need to provide a notarized letter authorizing the child to leave the country. This can be important if your spouse and kids are planning to join you in, say, Paris, after you finish your business trip.

5.      Pick the right aircraft for your flight. If you want to fly non-stop, consider a large-cabin heavy jet. For flights from the East Coast, the Gulfstream G-IV series is the smallest heavy jet that flies nonstop to and from Europe in either direction; other options include the Bombardier Challenger 600 series or the Dassault Falcon 2000 series. All of these jets can typically fly from the northeast United States to most destinations in Western Europe nonstop. However, for the return flight to the United States, these aircraft will likely require a fuel stop.

For flights from the West Coast, you’ll need to upgrade to ultra-long-range aircraft like the Gulfstream V or G550, the Falcon 7X or the Bombardier Global Express/5000. Super-mid-size jets like the XOJET Citation X and XOJET Challenger 300 will need to make a fuel stop (usually in Iceland, Canada or Maine) when flying to and from Europe. Watch this blog for an upcoming in-depth comparison of these aircraft.

At XOJET, we can arrange any of these aircraft for you through our own fleet and through the XOJET Preferred Partner Network, a carefully vetted list of the best operators.

Bottom line: it’s the little details that can affect your flight experience. Work with a private aviation consultant who has booked international travel before and can handle all the details. Make sure your consultant has the trip management capabilities to handle a European trip and can give you an all-inclusive price, including fuel (measured by the liter, fuel is much more expensive in Europe).

The XOJET team has extensive experience arranging for private jet trips to Europe and the rest of the world. They know what airports have the tougher permits and the most traffic, and which have customs offices. They also know the airports that charge less for fuel and landing fees. For example, flying into London Luton can possibly save you thousands in fuel costs, permits, and landing fees over flying into a high-volume airport like Heathrow or one that requires special permits, like London City.

A good aviation consultant will give you those options, make suggestions, and handle all of the details for you. Bon voyage!

Rolls out fun and easy way to find destination ideas and deals,

adds mobile site for users on the go

Cheapflights.com, the online leader in finding and publishing travel deals, is on a quest to deliver the world for less to travelers. To help make travel planning easy and fun, Cheapflights.com has added a new way to find deals on trip types of all kinds and to all sorts of places. And, to boost convenience and fast access to travel deals, anytime and anywhere, Cheapflights now offers a mobile site that brings this new style of search as well as traditional deals search to smart phone users.

With a click on the “Be inspired” tab on the homepage at Cheapflights.com, travelers can now look for a deal in the same way they would describe a trip they want to take. They simply name a departure point, time frame and, if they choose, a trip type such as beach or ski & snow or city break. With a click they see up to a dozen possible trips. From there, they can use sliders to enhance the search based on budget, location and even average temperature.

“Travelers have asked for a simple tool that reflects how people think and talk about planning a trip,” said Chris Cuddy, CEO of Cheapflights Media. “We have found that the most frequent questions travelers ask when exploring a trip are when, where, and how much. We’ve designed our new search tools to be a natural extension of these conversations.  It’s accessible from your mobile device and computer so that you’re prepared, whenever or wherever a travel discussion breaks out, to find the best travel deals.”

The “Be inspired” option opens up a world of travel possibilities, allowing users to brainstorm about where they can go and what they can do. Users cast a wide net to start and then use simple filters to refine their search. This offering means users coming to Cheapflights.com have a choice of deals search, date search and, now, ideas search.

Going Mobile

With the launch of our new mobile site, m.cheapflights.com, users on the go can access Cheapflights.com’s inventory of deals on flights departing in the next 90 days. The site, which is optimized for a wide variety of smart phones, works as an extension of Cheapflights.com.

For the first time, travelers can search for great deals and new destination ideas with the touch of a button. The streamlined mobile site offers three user paths, selected by icons across the top:

· Deals Search – The plane icon on the left takes users directly to the mobile optimized version of Cheapflights’ popular deals search where they can plug in a departure and a destination and see a selection of flight deals from our airline and OTA partners.

  • Inspiration Search – The globe icon in the middle links to the inspiration search, which maps a range of deals and destinations available to help would-be travelers see all their trip possibilities in a glance. Users can simply select or use the phone’s GPS location finder to auto locate a departure point.  They then choose their preferred departure time frame and have the option to select price range and trip type, such as ski & snow, beach or family. Deal options show up on a map, and users have the power to edit the search and learn more about the chosen destination to find just the right trip. They can then share the deal they have found with other would-be travelers via email, Twitter and Facebook.

· My Suitcase – The luggage icon on the right launches a packing and planning guide that helps users prep for the trips they book with helpful preparation lists and details about their chosen destination.

In anticipation of a strong rebound in travel demand from the United States this winter, tourism officials have announced that Caribbean Airlines will begin twice weekly non-stop service from JFK to Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Caribbean Airlines service will begin on December 14 and is expected to boost last minute holiday bookings and assist returning nationals looking for last minute deals. Service will originate from Port of Spain to V.C. Bird International Airport and return service from New York’s JFK.

  • Strategic Network Expansion in Latin America

Star Alliance, the way the Earth connects, will be expanding its presence in Latin America following the unanimous approval by its Chief Executive Board (CEB), to accept both Avianca-TACA and Copa Airlines as future member airlines.

“On behalf of the Chief Executive Board, it gives me great pleasure to invite Avianca-TACA and Copa Airlines to join the Star Alliance network. The addition of these two quality airline groups concludes a strategic process which increases the Alliance’s footprint in the vibrant, growing economies of Latin America,” Jaan Albrecht, CEO Star Alliance said. “The aviation landscape in this region is changing rapidly and alliances are playing an ever bigger role as Latin America continues to develop.”

The combined network of the two airline groups gives Star Alliance a more prominent footprint in Central America, the Caribbean and the northern and western regions of South America, as well as additional direct connections between Latin America and cities in Europe. Star Alliance passengers will in future have access to a large range of new destinations and flights connecting through the Copa Airlines hubs in Panama City (Panama) and Bogota (Colombia) and the Avianca-TACA hubs in Bogota (Colombia), San Salvador (El Salvador), Lima (Peru) and San Jose (Costa Rica).

At the same time, the existing Avianca-TACA and Copa Airlines customer base will be able to access the global Star Alliance network and make use of the benefits that an alliance provides, such as collecting and redeeming miles on all member carriers.

The addition of the two carrier groups is the culmination of a strategic process to extend Star Alliance’s reach in Latin America. This began with the addition of Continental Airlines just over a year ago, improving connections between North America and Central and South America. Further network expansion and improved connectivity to, from and within South America was made possible by the joining of TAM Airlines in May.

“Copa Airlines’ membership in Star Alliance will enhance our global reach as we implement strong partnerships with the Alliance’s 27 carriers and link Latin America’s most efficient hub, our Hub of the Americas in Panama City, to Star Alliance´s vast global network,” said Pedro Heilbron, CEO, Copa Airlines. “In addition, our participation in the Alliance will enhance our already strong commercial alliance with United-Continental, in place since 1998.  We will now continue to build this value within the Star Alliance family.”

“We want to thank Star Alliance for welcoming us as future members of this truly global connectivity effort, joining the leading airline network in terms of daily flights, destinations and countries served as well as number of member airlines. As Avianca-TACA we are working towards becoming a valuable partner for Star Alliance and its members; it is a determining factor for our competitive strategy that will enable us to leap forward in terms of the breath and scale of the benefits provided to our passengers,” said Fabio Villegas, CEO of Avianca-TACA. “We are excited to start the incorporation process that will surely yield reciprocal benefits to all our clients and become a part of the Star Alliance promise of an enjoyable travel experience anywhere in the world.”

Avianca-TACA and Copa Airlines will bring 46 new destinations to the Star Alliance newtwork. Once integration is complete, the customers of the 31 alliance members will have access to more than 22,500 daily flights serving 1,292 destinations in 188 countries.

Avianca-TACA serve more than 100 destinations around the world, operating a fleet of more than 150 modern short, medium and long range aircraft. The carrier group directly employs almost 12,000 people and has more than three million members in its loyalty program. Avianca and TACA, which each consolidate several smaller Latin American carriers, agreed to a strategic merger in October 2009, creating a combined network focussing on North, Central and South America, the Caribbean and cities in Europe. TACA’s initial request for Star Alliance membership dates back to 2008.

The two airlines of Copa Holdings – Copa Airlines and Copa Airlines Colombia – serve 52 destinations in 25 countries. The group recently strengthened its presence in Colombia, by rebranding Aero Republica to Copa Airlines Colombia. Copa Airlines’ Hub of the Americas at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City, Panama, is Latin America’s leading hub, with major traffic from the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Copa’s entrance into Star Alliance reinforces its 12-year-old alliance with United-Continental. Copa left Skyteam in October 2009.

In addition, Miami airport will also benefit from the latest Star Alliance expansion, with the number of Star Alliance member carriers present rising from seven to nine. “For Miami, this strengthens its role as the gateway between North America and the south of the continent,” Jaan Albrecht said.

The integration teams from Star Alliance, Avianca-TACA, Copa Airlines and the respective mentor carriers, Lufthansa and Continental, will now begin their work in order to achieve integration of both airline groups by mid 2012.

    About Avianca – TACA

Its multi-hub operating model provides passengers with varied and convenient travel options, through Bogotá, San Salvador, Lima and San Jose. The newly formed group will continue to work to search for synergies which benefit its clients, and to listen continuously to passenger needs.
